Welcome!
I was inspired by one of my favorite games, GeoGuessr, to make a terrain based version.
For those unfamiliar, the idea is that you try to figure out where you are in the world by scrolling around the large map (or google's street view in GeoGuessr). When you're ready to take a guess, mark your spot on the smaller street map on the right side of your screen and then click on the globe search button in the bottom right.
Your score is based on how far your guess is from the starting marker. You can zoom out, but beware! Each time you zoom out, your score is penalized by 20%.
Thanks for checking out this fun little project. I was curious how hard it would be to place yourself if you were dropped somewhere on the earth and had only a topographic map to guide you. I think there's a lot of insight to be gained from looking at the world through a topographic lens. This applies mostly to the natural world, but you can also see how variations in the earth's surface influence the diverse cultures in our world. Hope you enjoy!
If you liked this game, consider buying me a coffee or donating to one of my favorite non-profits, United Way of Dane County.
